Why a green coffee shipment can arrive lighter than it left — and how contracts should handle it

WEIGHT & MOISTURE IN TRANSIT

Green coffee can lose or gain moisture as humidity and temperature change during sea transit, so its loading and discharge weights may differ. A modest change can occur in normal transit, but a material shortage can also indicate packaging, container-condition or handling issues. The contract should distinguish these possibilities before the shipment moves.

Atlas view

Before loading, the buyer and supplier should agree a weight tolerance, where and how moisture and weight will be recorded, and the evidence required if a shortage is disputed. Atlas can help buyers identify the questions to include in that agreement. Record the gross weight and moisture reading at loading, then arrange an independent reweighing or inspection at discharge where appropriate; the agreed contract and applicable terms determine any claim.
